Ker 56 Varuna VI
Launched out of the German boatyard, Knierim, in 2015, Varuna VI was the latest in a long line of successful race boats commissioned by her owner Jens Kellinghusen….. But with a mindset change.
“If you intend to win an international top-level regatta at some point in your sailing career, you have to make a decision whether you want a boat that is built for inshore racing or one that is optimised for long distance offshore races”.
Jens, along with Ker Design Ltd and his team have clearly chosen the later and have arguably conceived one of the most purpose built and top-level offshore racing yachts. The nine-month construction period focused on weight saving with an ultra-light sandwich construction made of carbon prepregs with a Nomex and Kevlar honeycomb core.
The design brief from Jens and his crew was simple enough. The team was satisfied with the performance of the yacht’s predecessor, dubbed the “Super-TP52”. However, to win the offshore classics around the World it was necessary to improve the yacht’s reaching speed potential. The result was a yacht that was 10% longer, only 7% heavier but carried 35% more sail area. Coupled with updates in design and you have a boat that is phenomenally fast off the wind.
Jens is serious about winning the offshore classics and he knew that to accomplish this, you not only need the right boat, but also the team and organisation around a race winning team. Varuna VI is exactly that! The boat has been incredibly well maintained and campaigned and comes with everything necessary to continue the boats legacy as an offshore race winner.
This opportunity to by a race ready campaign don’t come around very often. The boat, the design concept and her inventory of spares are second to none. The price does reflect that but its simple, you get what you pay for…..
